The HOLLYWOOD
POLICE DEPARTMENT’S CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION DIVISION would like to warn
all Hollywood residents of the following RESIDENTIAL SCAMS!
Each year the South Florida area experiences an influx of roving
thieves who are experts in committing scams and “confidence” type
crimes. These thieves are “transient criminals” who prey on the
elderly. Statistics indicate that approximately 65% of all crimes
perpetrated by “transient criminals” involve victims 60 years of age
or older.
“Transient criminals” commit various types of crimes, the most popular
is the home repair scam, such as driveway sealing or roof repairs. The
repairs are usually not fully completed, utilize inferior materials,
combined with poor workmanship. Frequently the resident is extorted to
pay a higher amount than originally negotiated. Threats of violence
may be made against the resident which can result in a physical attack
in extreme cases.
Another “transient” related crime is the “imposter” burglar. The
“transient criminal” usually represents themselves as a representative
from either the City of Hollywood Water Department, or other private
utility companies. The suspect gains the confidence of the homeowner
to enter the residence, often offering a cash refund. Once inside, the
homeowner’s attention is diverted and valuables are taken. The
homeowner normally discovers the theft at a later time.
Should anyone represent themselves as a City of Hollywood
representative, or private utility worker, ask for picture
identification, and do not let them inside your residence. Beware of
“strangers” offering “good deals.” Report all incidents to the
Hollywood Police Department, at (954) 967-4357, or contact Detective
Paul Yancey of the Investigative Services Section, at (954) 967-4411.To visit
