| Analysis has shown that much of Hollywood's
drug activity has occurred in and around rental properties and hotels.
This program has been extremely successful in abating drug activity in
historically "high crime" areas of Liberia, South Central, and Washington
Park. The Neighborhood Services Unit has formed working partnerships
with rental property owners producing excellent results. The Neighborhood
Services Unit provides property owners with information regarding a prospective
tenant's criminal record. Through this informal network of property
owners, the drug offender may forfeit his/her right to rent in Hollywood.
Cognizant that there is a correlation between
run down properties and drug activity, the Neighborhood Services Unit has
ensured that Code Enforcement Officers cite for Property Standards violations.
By working with the Building Department, several derelict properties have
been identified and razed, thus improving the quality of life in the neighborhood.
By forming these close partnerships, the
Neighborhood Services Unit has received excellent information which resulted
in the execution of search warrants and numerous arrests. Once a
warrant is executed or an arrest is made, the Neighborhood Services Officer
works with the owner to ensure the problem does not reoccur.
One of the main components of this program
has been the education portion, where hundreds of property owners have attended
workshops throughout the city. Tenant screening,
eviction proceedings, property standards (code enforcement issues), penalties
for noncompliance (code fines, Nuisance Abatement proceedings, seizure
of property), and Crime Prevention are just a few of the concepts discussed.
