Students learn about the Department, staffing, mission, activities, programs, and services of the Hollywood Police Department. A background investigation is conducted on students recommended for Internships. Students will be required to successfully complete assignments provided by Training Unit staff. Internships are composed of both observation and actual work. An internship will provide students with a rich and rewarding experience. Formalized Intern Programs have been established with the following colleges and universities: Broward College Florida Atlantic University University of South Florida University of Central Florida Hollywood Police Department Overview The Hollywood Police Department is a full-service Law Enforcement Agency, comprised of over 500 dedicated professionals. The City of Hollywood is a diverse community with a permanent population of approximately 150,000 residents. As part of the Hollywood Police Department, Intern candidates will have the opportunity to be partnered with sworn officers and support staff doing real police work with the best equipment and technology the field has to offer in a major metropolitan environment. Students will be exposed to all aspects of an accredited, multi-faceted crime fighting organization. Upon successful completion of the course, Intern candidates walk away with a diverse, solid experience they can take with them into a criminal justice career. The Intern shall complete “Narrative Reports” as directed by the Training Unit Sergeant based on incidents observed during the block modules. Students will be evaluated on project assignments and work ethic. Students will not receive final evaluations until they have completed the minimum number of prescribed hours. The Major or designee of the respective module will be responsible for all forms pertaining to intern. Failure to comply with the requirements set forth in the guidelines, the rules and regulations set forth by the Intern Coordinator constitutes automatic dismissal from the program and a notice of failure will be sent to the University’s Director of Internship Program. College Intern Rules Interns shall not engage in conduct that would bring discredit to the Department or their College or University. Failure to comply with the Intern Program rules may include automatic dismissal and a notice of failure will be sent to the University’s contact person. Interns are encouraged to greet fellow citizens and talk with them in friendly and helpful ways. Interns should avoid inappropriate comments, conversations and gestures. Interns shall maintain a neat, well-groomed appearance. Interns may wear clothing appropriate for a business type atmosphere: Men: slacks, dress shirt, tie, dress shoes with socks Women: dress, skirt or slacks, blouse and closed-toed shoes Interns will not deviate from this dress code unless specifically instructed to do so by the Training Unit Supervisor Interns will enter the building through the first floor lobby door; the exception will be when an Intern is specifically instructed to do otherwise by a Supervisor. Interns must wear their Identification Card while in the Police Facility in a manner that is readily visible. Please provide as much notice as possible when a personal commitment will cause you to miss a scheduled shift. If the absence is an emergency, contact the intern program Supervisor directly. Interns should remain within their designated work area unless instructed to do otherwise. Interns are not sworn Police Officers and should not represent themselves as such. Police Interns shall not involve themselves in enforcement actions. Interns shall not interfere with the action(s) of a sworn Police Officer. Interns shall not pursue or detain anyone within the Police Facility. Interns shall not intervene in civil matters in their role as a Police Department Intern. An intern, while functioning in that capacity, is not permitted to carry weapons; this includes interns who have a Florida Concealed Weapons Permit. Information learned while serving as an Intern that is of a confidential nature should be kept confidential. No sketches, photographs, audio, or video recordings are to be taken by interns. Additionally interns will be prohibited from disclosing information to any members of the media. Narcotics and/or alcohol may not be consumed prior to and/or during a scheduled shift. (Prescription medication is permitted.) Complaints or concerns which may develop in your capacity as an Intern for the Hollywood Police Department should be reported to the Intern Program Supervisor as soon as possible.
