The Hollywood Police Honor Guard is designed to
provide the Department with a specially trained ceremonial team to render
honors, preserve tradition, stimulate Esprit-de-corps and instill pride.
The Honor Guard accomplishes this by providing
guidance and uniformity in the conduct of ceremonies and by establishing a
specific sequence of events during those ceremonies. The unit also provides a
highly trained, specially uniformed group of motivated Officers to perform the
particulars of those ceremonies.
HISTORY & DUTIES
In 1986, after several years as a small group of
volunteers, the unit was formally established, under the guidance of Master
Police Office Paul Dungan, who is now retired. The Unit is presently commanded by
Lieutenant Manny Marino. Captain Rode and Lieutenant Diana Pereira-Pabon administer the training,
assignments and event coordination. The Police Honor Guard is attached to the
Department’s Public Affairs Unit and consists of 25 sworn Officers that are
broken down in smaller, cross trained, units to provide the Police Department
with a:
- Commander
- Casket Team
- Color Team
- Drill Team

- Flag Team
- Rifle Team
- Support Team

RIFLE TEAM:
Used in funerals and memorial ceremonies to provide the traditional “Three Rifle
Volley” rifle salute. Additionally they provide the Color Guards for the Flag
Team.
COLOR TEAM:
Used to post, present or display, according to protocol, the National, State,
City, Police and Police Memorial Flags in addition to the Honor Guard Guidon at
a multitude of ceremonies, meetings and events.
CASKET TEAM:
Carries the remains of fallen Officers, and retired Officers from the funeral
home and church to the cemetery. They also provide the Casket Watch during wakes
and viewings. This Team contains the Flag Team which is responsible for folding
the National Flag for presentation to the family funerals.
DRILL TEAM:
Supports the other teams providing additional personnel when needed and
participates in parades, marching ceremonies, escorts, Honor Corridors or
wherever needed. They fill specific requested positions such as presenting
wreaths, driving vehicles, Flag Disposal Ceremonies and any other formation type
assignments.
SUPPORT TEAM:
Consists of the Honor Guard Guidon Bearer, Bugler, Drummer, Quartermaster and
Administrative Personnel.
The Hollywood Police Honor Guard is a very active
unit filling 40 to 60 ceremony requests annually.
The Honor Guard in conjunction with the Broward
County Honor Guard Association periodically hosts an Honor Guard Training
Seminar at the Broward County Institute of Public Safety. This training session
is provided at no cost to the agency and is attended by sworn Law Enforcement
Officers, Fire Fighters and Military Personnel from every level of Law
Enforcement in Broward County. In addition the unit is an active contributing
member of the Broward County Multi-Agency Police Honor Guard Association.
