Responsibilities
The primary goal of the
Traffic Division is to reduce motor vehicle crashes in the City. The Traffic
Unit is responsible for investigating motor vehicle crashes as well as
conducting selective traffic enforcement within high crash areas and other
areas where complaints are received. The Traffic Unit is also responsible for
the orderly flow of traffic in the City.
Officers assigned to
the Motor Unit must pass an 80 hour class on motorcycle instruction, as well as
additional training conducted on a monthly basis.
The new squad of
Officers expands coverage from daytime well into the night time. Both day and afternoon squads strictly
monitor high accident crash locations, especially during rush hour. Officers pay particular to the biggest
contributors of accidents, speed and running of red lights. Along with the Department’s overall
Community Policing philosophy, Motor Officers are assigned to neighborhoods where
they are responsible for community traffic concerns.
Of course, children are a priority and school zone
violations are enforced on a daily basis, both in the morning and afternoon
sessions.
The afternoon Motor Unit is also responsible for combating
various crime issues (drug and prostitution complaints, street level robberies,
burglaries, etc.) as well as assist Patrol with major incidents (gas leak,
missing children, etc.).

a St. Patrick’s
Day Parade.
The entire Motor Unit also conducts DUI enforcement on a
monthly basis throughout the City. The Hollywood Police Department believes that wearing seat
belts save lives, therefore we participate in “Buckle Up Enforcement”. Although the Department conducts enforcement
throughout the year, four blitzes are conducted annually.
Equipment The Hollywood Police Department leases 18 Harley-Davidson
FLHP-I ROADKING Police Solo Motorcycles.
Along with Motor Officers, several Patrol Officers receive
specific training regarding DUI enforcement (Standardized Field Sobriety
Testing). Mobil Vision 7 cameras are
assigned to Patrol Officers.
The Hollywood Police Department treats speeding as a
tremendous safety concern, therefore 85 radar units have been issued to
Officers from Patrol, Motors, Neighborhood Team Leaders, and School Resource
Officers. The Department primarily uses
Stalker radar but also purchased two Ultra Lyte laser radar units.
Sixteen tint meters are issued to Patrol Officers.
The Department also utilizes two SMART radar trailers. This tool provides staff with speed data and
is an excellent reminder to drivers to stay within the speed limit.
Citizen/Civic Concerns
Enforcement by the Motor Unit is directed by both crash data and/or civic or
citizen concerns. Should you have a traffic related concern, please call
954-967-4467.
