Prostitution

Prostitution is a vice crime with origins dating back to pre-industrial societies, as well as the middle ages (5th century to 15th century).  In legal terms, the word prostitute refers only to those who engage overtly in such sexual-economic transactions, usually for a specified sum of money.  Prostitutes may be of either sex, but throughout history the majority have been women, who have usually entered prostitution through coercion, drug addiction,  or under economic stress.

Generally, there are three forms of prostitution:

Escorts:
These are usually the upper class prostitutes, demanding high end dollar for their services.  These women may work for a service that will cater to the "Johns" request.

Call girls:
As the name implies, these prostitutes usually work out of their homes, or work regional resort areas.  They usually have a list of "clients" that they visit regularly, and are paid in the medium range.

Streetwalkers:
The majority of prostitutes fit this category; they are also the ones that the Crime Suppression Unit comes into contact with.  These are women, and some men, who find their customers on city streets.  They are paid in the low range, and a majority of the time are "working" to support narcotic habits (crack cocaine, heroin, etc.).  "Boyfriends", or pimps, may manage some of these prostitutes.

The Crime Suppression Unit has been working diligently in removing prostitution from the City of Hollywood.  Not only do members of the Crime Suppression Unit work undercover in effecting arrests of the actual prostitutes, but also reverse prostitution stings are being staged at regular intervals every month. This is when we use a female Police Officer to pose as a prostitute and arrest the people who solicit her.

The Federal Highway corridor has been targeted repeatedly and consistently by the Hollywood Police Department in an effort to eradicate prostitution related activity from the area.  Hundreds of arrests have been made, and vehicles have been seized from the "johns" as a deterrent measure to convince them that searching for this type of activity in Hollywood is a losing proposition.
