The Training and Professional Development
Unit is committed to quality, contemporary training that will serve to
enhance the Department and its most valued assets, our members.
This section of the Department is responsible
for the overall training and development of all sworn and non-sworn personnel
numbering over 600. There are four major components that comprise
Training and Professional Development:
FTO Program:
The Field Training Officer (FTO) program
is a 15 week intensive program designed for graduates of the
Police Academy. The program seeks to better prepare recruits for
Uniformed Patrol assignments during their introductory phase of law enforcement.
This unique program, designed by the Hollywood Police Department, is highly
regarded by the regional law enforcement community.
Range:
The Department has an on-site, live firing
range, as well as a state of the art firearm simulator. A full-time
Range Master is responsible for management of the range. The firearm
simulator is scenario based interactive video training that places Officers
in realistic "SHOOT-DON'T SHOOT" situations. Officers are required
to qualify with their .45 caliber sidearm, and /or on the simulator quarterly.
The firearm training that Hollywood Police Officers receive far exceeds
the State recommendations.
Wellness Program:
This program seeks to encourage Officers
to maintain an above standard of physical fitness by providing them with
an on-site fitness center with both cardio- vascular and weight training
equipment. Officers participating in the program are afforded three
hours per week to maintain their fitness level. The fitness center
is a state of the art facility available to all members, 24 hours
a day.
Advanced & In-Service Training:
All members of the Department are provided
with training opportunities, both in-house, as well as off-site training.
While much of the training Officers and civilian personnel receive is mandated,
members who seek to further advance their knowledge and skills are encouraged
to attend additional training seminars and workshops. All training
requests are facilitated through Training and Professional Development.
The training that Hollywood Officers and support personnel receive far
exceeds State guidelines.
