began his career with the Hollywood Police Department in 1982 where
he was assigned to the Patrol Division. In 1983, he was assigned to
the Vice, Intelligence and Narcotics Unit, where he served as a
Detective.
In 1991, Major Brooks was assigned to the Youth
Services Division as a School Resource Officer. During his
assignment, he actively participated with the Police Athletic League,
and initiated a “Drug Talk” Program while serving as the Youth Crime
Watch Coordinator.
In 1993, Major Brooks returned to the South
Broward Drug Enforcement Unit where he served as liaison between the
South Broward Drug Enforcement Unit and the Federal Bureau of
Investigations, Drug Enforcement Agency and the Secret Service.
Promoted to Sergeant in February of 2000, Major
Brooks held positions in Patrol, the Crime Suppression Unit, South
Broward Drug Enforcement Unit, and Internal Affairs. He is a member
of the Crisis Negotiation Team and currently serves as the Training
Coordinator for the unit.
In January of 2005, Major Brooks was promoted to
Lieutenant and was assigned to the Special Operations Unit. He was
subsequently promoted to Captain and in August of 2008 was promoted to
the rank of Police Major. Major Brooks is currently in charge of Criminal Investigations Division
which includes the Investigative Services Section, the Vice,
Intelligence and Narcotics Section, the Family Services Section, the
Crime Suppression Unit, and the School Resource Officer program.
Major Brooks was awarded the Crime Stoppers
Award in 1987 in recognition of Outstanding Contribution and Support
for Effective Law Enforcement. In 2000, under his direction,
Neighborhood Team 5 was awarded the first Departmental COPPS Award.
Major Brooks has received numerous internal and external Letters of
Recognition and Department Commendations to include, Community
Involvement, Continuous Service, Unit Citation, Good Conduct and
Distinguished Expert.
Major Brooks currently teaches subjects in
Criminal Justice and Alternative Dispute Resolution at the Union
Institute and University in Miami, Florida. Major Brooks is a member
of the Florida
Association of Hostage Negotiators (F.A.H.N.) and the National
Organization for Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE).
Major Brooks earned a Bachelor of Science
Degree in Criminal Justice from Alabama State University and a Master
of Science Degree in Dispute Resolution from Nova Southeastern
University. Major Brooks is also a graduate of the University of
Louisville Southern Police Institute 46th Command Officers
Course.
