Major Smith, a native of Hollywood, began his career with the
Hollywood Police Department in October, 1979 as a Patrol Officer.
He has served in the Patrol Section, Street Crimes Unit, Special
Weapons and Tactics Team, Criminal Investigations Division and
Internal Affairs. In 1998, Major Smith was promoted to
Sergeant with supervisory assignments in the Patrol Section and
Criminal Investigations Division. In September, 2002, he was
promoted to Lieutenant with assignments in the Patrol Section,
Criminal Investigations Division and Internal Affairs. He was
subsequently promoted to Captain and is currently the Major of
the COP Division.
Major Smith is a graduate of the 9th Session of the Senior
Leadership Program at the Executive Institute at the Florida
Department of Law Enforcement in Tallahassee. He also went on to
complete his studies and received his Bachelor’s Degree from Barry
University. Major Smith’s professional affiliations include
membership in the Florida Criminal Justice Executive Institute
Associates and Broward County Crime Commission, as well as the Board
of Directors for the Diamonds in the Rough youth golf program.
Major Smith has earned numerous internal awards to include Officer
of the Year, Detective of the Year, the Chief’s Special Recognition
Award, two Administrative Excellence Awards, four Community
Involvement Awards and three Unit Citation Awards, as well as over 100
internal and external Commendations and Letters of Recognition.
